Introduction to .NET Mobile
Previous Next

It's all .NET

  • The really cool thing about the Mobiles toolkit is that it takes advantage of the .NET Framework.

  • The languages that you use when creating windows and Web applications, the same you can used to develop software design for your mobile devices.

  • You'll create an ASP.NET project, once you've loaded the Mobile Toolkit and add to it a Mobile Web form. You can use it almost exactly like a regular Web form once you've defined a Mobile Web form.

  • With only a few differences, creating a mobile application is just as easy as creating a Web application.

  • One key difference with mobile page is that you'll be working with multiple forms on one page. You can think of a collection of forms as a stack of cards that you can flip around and display on a mobile device.

  • It is easy to group two or three forms with related functionality on the same page. You could also use only one form per page.

  • This will help you to reduse the size of the code if you're passing information from form to form. This will also make your application more legible and cleaner.

  • By setting the ActiveForm property of the mobile page we can switch between forms, this allows you to push new information "to the surface" in your application.

  • Some mobile devices support HTML or a limited version of HTML, some support WAP and WML, and some support both or a different language. Different mobile devices support different programming languages.

  • Microsoft has introduced a new platform for developing mobile applications. That is .NET Mobile.

  • Microsoft Mobile Internet Toolkit (MMIT) or simply .NET Mobile. Is all about how to develop mobile applications with an extension to the .NET Framework.

What You Should Already Know

Before you continue with .Net Mobile, it is better you first know the following technologies.

  • First any markup language, that is HTML or XHTML.

  • Than the Namespaces.

  • Then the ASP.NET.
  • If you are not aware of this technologies then first learn them. Find them in our Home page

    Software Requirements

you must have the following components to develop the mobile applications in .NET mobile:

  • First the Windows 2000 Professional or Server with IIS 5(Internet Information Service Version 5)

  • Second you have to have all the Windows 2000 service packs

  • Third you have to have the ASP.NET framework

  • Forth you have to have the MMIT(Microsoft Mobile Internet Toolkit)

  • Fifth you have to install the Internet Explorer 6.0(IE 6.0) or Internet Explorer 5.5(IE)

  • Sixth you have to have the WAP simulator

  • You can find the Internet Explorer(IE) and MMIT(Microsoft Mobile Internet Toolkit) from Microsoft MSDN
If you want to know about the installation process of ASP.NET, then visit ASP.NET tutorial

How to develop the mobile applications

With ASP.NET the mobile web applications can be easily developed. To start with the development, follow the following steps

  • First develop an ASP.NET page

  • Second include this System.Mobile.UI in the above ASP.NET page

  • Third add Mobile Controls to the page and start developing the mobile applications
