A valid HTML/XHTML document declares in the document what version of HTML/XHTML is used.
The document type declaration names the DTD (document type definition) in use for the document.

Transitional DTD
Frameset DTD
Authors must include one of the document type declarations in their documents.
The DTDs vary in the elements they support.
