Before accessing the database from a web page, a database connection has to be established.
To open an Access database by using ActiveX Data Objects(ADO), you use the Connection object.
Creating the Connection Object
The connection object is used in all ADO applications to open database and establish the link to database.If we have properly configured your web server, you can create an instance of this object by simply issuing the VBScript command:
set cn = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
Connection object will be vary from language to language.For example the same command in Visual Basic would be:
cn = new ADODB.Connection
Create a DSN-less Database Connection:
The simplest way to connecting to a database is to use a DSN-less connection. A DSN-less connection can be used against any Microsoft Access database on your webpage.
For Example: To connect the database with the following ASP code:
<%
set conn=Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
conn.Provider="Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0"
conn.Open "c:/vyomworld/vyom.mdb"
%>
If we have a database called "vyom.mdb" located in a web directory like "c:/vyomworld/",
Create an ODBC Database Connection
If we have an ODBC database called "vyom" we can connect to the database.
For Example: ASP code:
<%
set conn=Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
conn.Open "vyom"
%>
An ODBC Connection to an MS Access Database:
Here some steps are involve in how to create a connection to a MS Access Database:
step1: Open the ODBC icon to go Control Panel.
step2: Select the System DSN tab.
step3: Click on Add in the System DSN tab.
step4: Select the Microsoft Access Driver. Click Finish.
step5: In the next screen, click Select to locate the database.
step6: Give the database a Data Source Name (DSN).
step7: Than Click on "OK".
This configuration has to be done on the computer where your web site is located. If you are running Personal Web Server (PWS) or Internet Information Server (IIS) on your own computer, the instructions above will work,for example c/inetpub/wwwroot/---, but if your web site is located on a remote server, you have to have physical access to that server, or ask your web host to do this for you. :
