WebSite Design

Previous Next

A website is an address location or server on the World Wide Web (www) that contains your web pages and can be accessed by anyone on the internet.

A website is your personal online communications connection to the rest of the world. It is here that you will sell your product, pass on information, express an opinion and/or tell the world who you are.

How to Design a Website: In our Academic Tutorial gives you a step-by-step outline that leads you through the various stages of website design.

Step 1:Establish an identity and use it consistently on all pages.

Viewers of our webpages should know exactly who we are, and after linking should know if they're still on one of our site's pages. It doesn't mean every page looks the same, but the colors and graphics we use should be consistent throughout the website.

Step 2: Determine customers and their needs

Successful websites know who their customers and also there need and why they visit, and they provide a responsive and attractive display to those viewers. Customers don't visit our site because we spend time creating it; customers deserve maximum benefit from the time they allocate to us.

Step 3: Create user-friendly navigation

On a well-planned website it is quick and easy to find and navigate to information. Plan navigation before pages are created. Establish a navigation plan now to ensure that viewers quickly get what they need and that new pages of content can be quickly inserted and located.

Step 4: Arrange page for eye-catching display and user readability.

Analyze the information to be displayed and decide how it will be most readable. Pick a template that best accommodates that display. For example, a detailed background image would be unsuitable behind a lot of text.

Step 5: Focus on content

Web content vs. web presentation is constant and lively. But face it--viewers come to school or library pages for information, and if they don't get what they need, flash and glitz won't bring them back. The best websites pack essential information into well-organized and well-written text.

Step 6: Use graphic images to enhance, not overpower

Graphics are the special web challenge for web designers, requiring balance between overuse and skimpiness. A site filled with graphic images can have charm and impact. The secret for effective graphics is to stick to the theme and identity of the website. Logos as an identity predate the web, but a carefully chosen webpage logo clearly identifies the site and is a visual center of page design.

Download Speed

A common mistake made by many web developer is to develop a site on a local machine with direct access to the data, or to develop the site over a high-speed Internet connection. Sometimes developers are not aware of the fact that some of their pages take a long time to download.

Internet usability studies tell us that most visitors will leave a Web page that takes more than 7 seconds to download.

Before you publish any content heavy pages, make sure they are tested over a low-speed modem connection. If your pages take a long time to download, you might consider removing some of your graphic or multimedia content.
