XPath 1.0 was released as the W3C Recommendation 16. November 1999.

XPath 2.0 became W3C Working Draft 20. December 2001.

XPath 2.0 is a language derived from the XPath 1.0 and XQuery. The XPath 2.0 and XQuery 1.0 Working Drafts are generated from the common source, sharing much of the same syntax, and much of the text is identical.
